We all love taking the horses out locally, but the best part of owning a horse is the opportunities for adventure. Luckily, the United States is full of horse-friendly outdoor recreation areas perfect for the occasional day trip or longer vacation. We are producing a series to bring you information about the horse-friendly parks, campgrounds, and trails across the United States.

Natchaug State Forest Eastford, Ct 203-928-6121 Location: 4 miles south of Phoenixville on Route 198. Horse campground and trails Acres: 12,935 Users: hike, bike, horse 

Mohawk Mountain Ski Resort Goshen, Ct From Danbury go north on route 7, at intersection of route 4 turn right on 4 east and go 5 miles Trail Riders camp is located off of route 63 James L. Goodwin State Park Hampton, Ct. Location: 3 miles east of South Chaplin on Route 6. Acres: 2,171 Users: hike, horse  

Sleeping Giant State Park 200 Mount Carmel Ave. Hamden, CT 06518 203-789-7498 30 miles of trails Users: hike, horse Description: ponds, gorges, woods, and scenic vistas. A parking fee is charged on weekends and holidays April through October.  

Larkin State Bridle Trail DEPARPTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Office of Park and Recreation Hartford, Connecticut 06115 Large parking lot on the route 63 (accommodates large trailers). another parking area off Route 188 Users: hike, bike, and horse. 16 miles of well-maintained trails

Gay City State Park C/O DEP Eastern Headquarters 209 Hebron Road Marlborough, CT 06447 860-295-9523 Located on Route 85 about 12 miles from downtown Hartford and close to I-384. Acres: 1,569 11 miles of trails Users: hike, bike, horse Description: a pond, an old dam and mill site 

Salmon River State Forest C/O DEP Eastern Headquarters 209 Hebron Road Marlborough, CT 06447 860-295-9523 Acres: 6,700. Five miles of rail-to-trails Part of the 20-mile Airline State Park Trail that links Willamantic to Portland. Users: hike, bike, horse Collins P.  

Huntington State Park RT. 58 Redding, Ct Location: Take Route 58 to Sunset Hill Road. Park entrance is on east side of the road Acres: 878 Users: hike and horse  

Pauchaug State Forest RFD 1 Voluntown, Ct 06384 PH 203-376-4075 Location: 1 mile north of Voluntown on Route 49. Frog hollow horse campground 18 semi-wooded sites Acres: 22,938 acres Miles of roads and trails. Users: hike, bike, motorcycles and horses.
