New Mexico Parks, Campgrounds, and Trails

We all love taking the horses out locally, but the best part of owning a horse is the opportunities for adventure. Luckily, the United States is full of horse-friendly outdoor recreation areas perfect for the occasional day trip or longer vacation. We are producing a series to bring you information about the horse-friendly parks, campgrounds, and trails across the United States.

Brantley Lake State Park PO Box 2288 Carlsbad, NM 88221 505-457-2384 Located: 12 miles north of Carlsbad on route 285 Fees No potable water. Clayton State Park 141 Clayton Lake Road Clayton, NM 88415 505-374-8808 Located 15 miles north of Clayton on NM 370. Horseback riding is permitted on the north trail and the north camping area. 

Elephant Butte Lake State Park PO Box 13 Elephant Butte, NM 87935 505-744-5421 Location: Seven miles north of Truth or Consequences on I-25. 

Horses Sumner Lake State Park HC64 Box 125 Fort Sumner, NM 88119 505-355-2541 Directions: Off I-84, take state road 203 for 6 miles, turn right before crossing the dam, drive past the east campground and past the second cattle guard. Users: horse, hike Camping in the Alamogordo Creek campground Glenrio Welcome Center (shared by Skip Clayborn, Michigan/Utah) Located on the NM & Texas border off of I-40 Pens and water.  

Coyote Creek State Park PO Box 1477 Guadalupa, NM 87722 505-387-2328 Location: 14 miles north of Mora on NM 434. Users, hike, horse  

Murphy Lake State Park PO Box 1477 Guadalupa, NM 87722 505-387-2328 Location: Four miles south of Mora via NM 94, seven miles west of Ledoux. Primitive use area. No water

Description: Indoor stalls, stalls with runs, trailer parking, 4 camper hookups (coming soon), guest house, several motels within 2 miles from stables. Cost is $15.00 per night for stall, $12.00 per night for panel runs. Prices include 2 feedings of high-quality hay, good water and clean pens. High standards for a healthy environment. Trailer/LQ hookup $25 per night or stay at our doublewide guest house: $65.00 per night. Health papers incl. negative Coggins required.
