We all love taking the horses out locally, but the best part of owning a horse is the opportunities for adventure. Luckily, the United States is full of horse-friendly outdoor recreation areas perfect for the occasional day trip or longer vacation. We are producing a series to bring you information about the horse-friendly parks, campgrounds, and trails across the United States.

Fleming Road Stables Capp Council 3916 Fleming Road Albany, GA 31705 912-439-4166 Directions: Hwy US 19, Moultrie Road exit. Go left at first light onto Mock Road. Next road on right is Fleming Road. Facilities: 60 indoor stalls, pasture/turnout areas, trailer parking. $10/per night.

Facilities: 6 stall barn, wash rack. Well ventilated barn. 5+ acres, outdoor arena and variable speed treadmill.  

Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area C/O GA Wildlife Resources, 2592 Floyd Springs Road Armuchee, GA 30105 706-295-6041 Access to Crockford-Pigeon Mountain via Georgia Hwy. 193 west of Lafayette. Go 2.5 miles to Chamberlain Road; turn left and go three miles to gravel-surfaced Rocky Lane Road. Turn right and go a half-mile to the check station. No developed facilities. 30-plus miles of trails Users: hike, bike, horse  

The Rocktown section of the unit is closed to bikes and horses. Open Year-Round Zion Farms, INC 2979 Big Texas Valley Road N.W. Armuchee, GA 30105-0860 706-232-4323, (706)235-8002, Located in 1 1/2 hours from Atlanta, Facility: Bed and Breakfast. 340 acres of pastures, private paddocks, winding mountain trails, state-of-the art facilities and a cross-country course created by Olympic designer Roger Haller. Two guest cottages are available for the night or weekend’s stay, a homecooked breakfast is included with each night. For larger groups, can accommodate up to 45.
